LOS GATOS, Calif. –April 4, 2005 - Firetide, Inc., a
leader in wireless mesh networking, and Incipient Technologies,
a wireless Internet service provider and systems integrator,
today announced the installation of a Firetide mesh network in
the city of Isla Vista. The southern California college town
now has free Wi-Fi access in the downtown area.
“When we began this project, our goal was to provide a
cost-effective, quality Internet service to the residents of
Isla Vista,” said Steve LeBoeuf of Incipient Technologies. “Since
the majority of residents are university students, cost was as
much a factor as coverage. By using a wireless mesh topology,
we were able to cover a majority of the businesses and recreational
areas without the expense of a traditional wire based backbone.
The Firetide mesh equipment we chose provides a solid, self healing
network our customers can rely on.”
The wireless mesh network covers approximately 10 acres of commercial
space in the downtown area including 26 businesses and three
parks. The densely populated town has more than 20,000 residents
in an area slightly larger than 2 square miles. Most of these
residents are students of the various colleges and universities
in the Santa Barbara and Goleta area, most notably UC Santa Barbara.
“Isla Vista represents what is becoming a typical Firetide
customer,” said Bo Larsson, CEO of Firetide. “It
is a community with highly mobile residents who expect anywhere,
anytime access to the Internet. Firetide provides a reliable,
cost-effective solution that is fast and easy to install.”
Firetide networks are ideal for environments such as hotels,
airports, convention centers, municipalities, warehouses, and
other campus environments where structured wiring such as Ethernet
or fiber cabling is too difficult or costly to install.
Firetide mesh networks provide a high performance wireless backbone
that supports multiple applications and services, including those
that require extra capacity and fast throughput. They are designed
especially for high-bandwidth/low latency applications such as
video networks, voice over IP services, and Wi-Fi HotZones. The
self-configuring, self-healing mesh network scales quickly and
easily, resulting in a powerful and reliable wireless network.
Firetide products are sold through channel partners including
distributors, value added resellers (VARs), and systems integrators.
